Nuria Tesón is an independent journalist and writer, who works as a consultant, political advisor, and policy analyst from Cairo (Egypt) where she lived previously too between 2009-2014 before moving to Istanbul (Turkey). She is specialized in covering conflicts throughout the MENA region focussing on politics, human and women rights and freedom of expression... She sponsors the Egyptian photojournalist Shawkan, recently released on probation after 5 years in illegal pretrial detention.
She holds a Journalism degree from the Complutense University, a master degree from the Autónoma University, Madrid, and EL PAÍS.
Tesón is a Thompson Reuters Foundation Alumni and Aspen Young European Leader Fellow and develops her journalistic career in press, television, and radio. She worked as a staff member at EL PAÍS where she participated in several investigative coverages such as the Gürtel case that deserved an Ortega y Gasset Award in 2010. In 2009 she decided to become independent and ever since she has reported for media such as France 24, Al Jazeera, EL PAÍS, VOA, DW, RFI, Cuatro, CNN+, Cadena Ser, RCN, among others.
In 2014, she joined the Al Jazeera team as an AJ+ VJ contributor.
Tesón is the co-founder of the collective MásTesón with the photographer Miguel Ángel Sánchez with whom she was selected by TEDTalks and RTVE to illustrate their program Buenas ideas TED about Art to change the world. Their work has been featured in TIME, The New York Times, Le Monde, New Yorker... and exhibited from Cairo to Paris, through Dubai, Romania or Bruxelles.
She is the editor to MENA región for M’Sur online magazine on political Mediterranean issues, lecturer and speaker for different national and international institutions, teaches at the Autónoma de Madrid University-EL PAÍS School of Journalism, and it is the author of
Los que desafiaron a Gadafi (Those who challenged Gadaffi) El País /Amazon April 2011).
